The Avenues is a neighborhood in Salt Lake City, Utah. Historically, it was Salt Lake City’s first neighborhood, and is laid out perfectly grid-like with roads parallel and perpendicular.

It is considered a younger, hipper neighborhood compared to others in the area. Young professionals tend to populate the Avenues because of its close proximity to downtown Salt Lake City.

Real Estate in The Avenues

Homes in the Avenues are mostly restored Victorian homes. They are quaint and charming, and this happens to be one of the best features of this older neighborhood. They are a bit more expensive than other homes in Salt Lake City, with two bedroom cottages starting at around $200,000 and up.

There are historic mansions included in the neighborhood that are valued at over a million dollars. There are also apartment buildings in the neighborhood, where larger homes have been renovated and turned into apartment buildings. A pleasant two-bedroom apartment in the Avenues can rent for around $800.

Shopping and Entertainment

There are several local markets near the Avenues, but there are not a lot of retail and business establishments. The LDS Hospital is in the neighborhood, but downtown Salt Lake City is just a short distance away and this community tends to blend into the downtown life.

There are great shopping options that are convenient to the Avenues residents, such as City Creek Center, The Gateway and Trolley Square. In addition, there are many options for dining nearby.

Schools In and Around The Avenues

There are a number of great schools within the Avenues neighborhood. There are several good elementary schools, and one middle school, and kids in the area should attend West High School. West High School is a good school with great academics.

West has an International Baccalaureate program and has many advanced placement options for college credits. West High School has been ranked as the top high school in Utah by Newsweek magazine.

The athletic program at West High School is just as great as its academics, as is the selection of extracurricular activities. The student body at West is one of the most diverse in the state of Utah.

The racial, ethnic and socio-economic diversity is what makes it a great school. The population is made up of Asian, African American, Hispanic, Caucasian and Pacific Islander students.

The University of Utah sits at the southeastern section of the Avenues, and is actually within walking distance of students who live in the neighborhood. BYU Salt Lake and the LDS Business College are located in downtown Salt Lake City, so they are also convenient for students who live in the Avenues.

The Utah Transit Authority is available for those that live in the Avenues. These bus lines can transport people in this area to anywhere in Salt Lake City. There are several stops in downtown, making it a convenient place to travel for bus riders.

The Avenues residents are very environmentally aware, and are known to recycle, use bicycles and public transit in order to cut down on their carbon footprint. The identity of the neighborhood is unique. People are open and friendly. Because the homes are close together, people are more prone to get to know their neighbors.
